Seven EUROFIGHTER will come from TAFW 73 "S". It is one of the most advanced European fighter aircraft. In the German Air Force, the EUROFIGHTER replaced the MiG-29 FULCRUM and F-4F PHANTOM II fighter aircraft as well as the majority of the TORNADO fighter bombers.

The EUROFIGHTER was developed as a single-seat, twin-engine multirole fighter. In order to reduce pilot workload, many functions will be performed automatically. The pilot may activate certain cockpit functions via direct voice input.

A twin-seat variant of the EUROFIGHTER was produced for pilot training and conversion training. A considerable number of the so called “German Trainers (GT)“, are on duty with Tactical Air Force Wing 73 "Steinhoff" 2nd Flying Squadron at Laage Airbase.

Unlike the F-4F PHANTOM II and the TORNADO, the EUROFIGHTER does not use its afterburner for takeoff during normal flight operations. This results in a reduction of noise emissions at the airbases. The EUROFIGHTER is able to reach and cruise at supersonic speed over an extended period of time without using its afterburner. At present, only a few fighters (e.g. Saab JAS 39 Gripen, F-22 Raptor, Suchoi T-50) have this “supercruise” capability.

In the German Air Force, the EUROFIGHTER has been in service with Tactical Air Force Wing 73 "Steinhoff" (TAFW) since 2004 and with Tactical Air Force Wing 74 (previously Fighter Wing 74) since 2006. Furthermore it is used by Tactical Air Force Wing 31 "Boelcke" (previously Fighter Bomber Wing 31 "B") since the end of 2009 and by Tactical Air Force Group "Richthofen" (previously Fighter Wing 71 "R") since April 2013.
